Color Analysis for Men

Color analysis works the same way for men as for women, because it measures skin, hair and eyes rather than anything gendered. What changes is the application: the decisions that matter are shirt colors, suit and jacket neutrals, knitwear, and which metal your watch should be. Run the test below and the palette you get is the same one, read differently.

How to take a photo that gives a reliable result
  • Daylight, facing a window. Overhead bulbs are warm and will push the reading warm.
  • No makeup, especially no foundation. It is the single largest source of error.
  • Hair back and off your face, and use the quiz instead if your hair is dyed far from its natural colour.
  • No filter, no beauty mode, and nothing brightly coloured near your face.
1/12 How light or dark is your natural hair?
2/12 Does your natural hair have warm (golden/red/honey) or cool (ash) tones?
3/12 How much contrast is there between your hair, skin and eyes?
4/12 Which best describes your eye pattern?
5/12 Which metal makes your skin look healthiest?
6/12 Pure white or soft ivory, which flatters you more?
7/12 How deep is your skin tone?
8/12 Which pink flatters you more?
9/12 Which flatters you more?
10/12 How does pure black look next to your bare face?
11/12 Which green suits you better?

The four decisions that actually matter

  • Your white. Almost every man owns white shirts. If you are warm, they should be cream or ivory; if you are cool, optic white. This is the single highest leverage change on the list because the shirt sits directly under your chin.
  • Your navy. Warm navy has a green cast, cool navy has a purple one, and they look meaningfully different on. Most suiting is cool navy, so warm seasons should look specifically for the warmer version or go to brown.
  • Your neutral beyond navy. Warm seasons look better in brown, olive and camel than in grey. Cool seasons look better in charcoal and grey than in brown. Grey on a warm face is the most common quiet mistake.
  • Your metal. Watch, glasses frames, belt buckle and ring should agree with your undertone, and they sit close enough to your face or hands to be noticed.

Beards, grey hair and glasses

Facial hair often carries more red than head hair, which is real information and worth using: if your beard grows in noticeably warmer than your hair, you are likely a neutral rather than a decisively cool season.

Grey and silver hair changes your depth rather than your undertone. A man who was a Dark Winter at thirty is often a True or Bright Winter at sixty: same temperature, lighter value, and a palette that shifts from the deepest colors toward the clearer ones. It is worth retaking the test after your hair has substantially changed.

Glasses frames sit permanently on your face, which makes them the highest impact accessory you own. Frame color should follow the same rules as your metal: warm tortoiseshell and gold for warm seasons, black, gunmetal and cool tortoise for cool ones.

Questions people ask

Does color analysis work for men?
Yes, identically. It measures the undertone, depth and clarity of your skin, hair and eyes, none of which is gendered. Only the application differs, since men make fewer color decisions and each one counts for more.
What color shirt suits me?
Start with the white. Warm seasons look better in cream and ivory, cool seasons in optic white. After that, take the shirt colors from your palette's lighter statement colors and its neutrals, since a shirt sits directly under your face where the effect is strongest.
Should men wear gold or silver?
The same rule applies as for anyone: gold if your undertone is warm, silver if it is cool. It matters more than it sounds because a watch, a ring and a pair of glasses are worn every day and rarely swapped.
Can I do this with a beard?
Yes. The photo path samples your cheeks and forehead rather than your jaw, so a beard does not interfere. If your beard is a noticeably different color from your hair, the quiz will handle it better.
