Light Summer Color Palette
Light Summer is the lightest cool season: soft, gentle coloring that looks its best in cool pastels with a little grey in them. Your palette is powder blue, lavender, soft rose, cool mint and periwinkle, your neutrals are soft white and cool grey rather than black, and your metal is silver.

Statement colors
Wearable near the face. These are the colors that carry an outfit.
Accents
Smaller doses: a scarf, a bag, a print.
Neutrals
The workhorses. Trousers, coats, knitwear and everything the statement colors sit against.
Best metal
Silver. Held flat against your bare cheek in daylight it blends into your skin, where the other metal sits on top of it. How to check this yourself.
Where Light Summer sits
Every season is a position on three axes. Light Summer is defined by its light dimension, with cool deciding which side it falls on.
Depth
Light is the dominant dimension. Your hair, skin and eyes all sit high on the value scale and close together, so there is very little internal contrast in your face. A dark color introduces contrast you do not have and takes the outfit over.
Undertone
Cool is the secondary dimension, and it is a neutral leaning cool. You are not as decisively blue based as a True Summer, which is why a warm leaning pastel like a soft coral will not actively fight you the way a golden mustard would.
Clarity
Clarity is medium to soft. Your colors are pale and slightly hazy, as though seen through a little mist. Fully saturated brights are too strong for your gentle coloring and pure greyed muddiness is too heavy.
How to tell if you are a Light Summer
- Your natural hair is light and ash toned: ash blonde, mushroom blonde, or a light cool brown with no gold in it.
- Silver looks clean against your skin. Gold looks slightly brassy or yellow.
- Black is draining rather than dramatic, and next to your face it makes your skin look grey.
- Your eyes are light and slightly soft rather than sharp: blue, grey blue, soft green or a light cool hazel.
- You look better in a soft white shirt than in an optic white one, and better in optic white than in cream.
Your natural coloring
- Skin
- Fair to medium, neutral or neutral-cool, beige/pinkish.
- Hair
- Icy to medium ash blonde, light ash brown; no natural warm highlights.
- Eyes
- Light grey/blue/azure/green; cool and slightly greyed.
How to wear the palette
Build outfits from two or three light colors rather than one light and one dark. Powder blue with soft white, lavender with cool grey, soft rose with grey blue. Keeping the whole outfit in the top half of the value range is what lets your face stay the focus.
Soft navy is your evening dark and it does the job black is doing badly. It is deep enough to feel formal and cool enough to belong to you.
Rose beige is a useful and underused neutral for you: it is warmer than cool grey without being warm, which makes it the easiest bridge to the beige tones that dominate high street basics.
Silver, white gold and platinum. Pearl is worth mentioning specifically, because it sits exactly in your value and clarity range and almost nothing else does.
Colors to avoid, and why
Black, stark white and dark/vivid warm shades (intense orange), they age and overpower the delicacy.
- Black, and dark charcoal with it. Both are far deeper than anything in your natural coloring, so they win the outfit and leave your face looking like an afterthought.
- Warm golden and orange shades: mustard, rust, camel, burnt orange. They are the opposite temperature and they turn your skin sallow.
- Very bright saturated colors such as true fuchsia or emerald. Your palette works by gentleness, and a full strength bright next to it looks like someone shouting.
- Cream and ivory, which are the warm equivalents of your soft white and always look slightly dirty against cool skin.
Makeup for Light Summer
The same three dimensions apply to makeup, and lip color is where a mismatch shows fastest because it sits next to your teeth and your skin at once.

Hair colors that harmonise
Hair is the largest block of color you wear and the only one you cannot take off at the end of the day. These sit in the same temperature and depth range as your natural coloring.
If you are not sure
Light Summer sits between two neighbours on the flow wheel, and those two are the only seasons you can realistically be confused with. Here is how to tell them apart.
Light Summer or Light Spring?
The pair most often confused, because both are light, both suit pastels and both look drained in black. The difference is temperature. Hold ivory and then pure white against your bare face in daylight: Light Summer looks cleaner in white, Light Spring looks healthier in ivory. Silver against gold gives the same answer.
Light Summer or True Summer?
Both are cool and soft. True Summer runs deeper and more clearly blue based; Light Summer stays pale and slightly neutral. If medium cool shades like raspberry and dusty blue look good on you rather than heavy, look at True Summer. If anything past pastel starts to wear you, you are Light Summer.
Light Summer celebrities
Estimates rather than verdicts. These typings come from published photographs under unknown lighting, usually with professional makeup and dyed hair, which are the three biggest sources of error in color analysis. They are useful for seeing what the season looks like on a face you already know.
- Cate Blanchett Cool light coloring with grey blue eyes and a gentle, soft edged face.
- Margot Robbie Light cool blonde with fair, rosy skin and a low contrast face.
- Reese Witherspoon Ash blonde with light, cool skin and very little separation between her features.
- Ryan Gosling Light cool coloring with ash toned hair, which reads as Light Summer rather than Spring.

Take the 60 second testQuestions people ask
- What colors should a Light Summer avoid?
- Black, cream, and any warm golden shade such as mustard, rust or camel. Also avoid very bright saturated colors. Black overwhelms your light coloring, warm shades fight your cool undertone, and brights are simply louder than your face.
- Is Light Summer warm or cool?
- Cool, but neutral leaning cool rather than decisively blue based. That is why a very soft warm pastel will not ruin an outfit for you, while a saturated golden shade will.
- What hair color suits a Light Summer?
- Ash blonde, platinum, mushroom blonde and light cool brown. The rule is stay light and stay ash. Golden and copper tones fight your undertone, and going dark introduces a contrast your face does not naturally have.
- Can a Light Summer wear white?
- Yes, but soft white rather than optic white, and never cream. Soft white is a white with a touch of grey in it, which matches the slightly hazy quality of your own coloring.
- What is the best makeup for a Light Summer?
- Cool, soft and light. A rose or soft pink lip, a soft rose blush and a cool taupe on the eye. Heavy black liner and deep berry lips are the two things that most often make a Light Summer look older than she is.
