Where Soft Autumn sits
Every season is a position on three axes. Soft Autumn is defined by its soft dimension, with warm deciding which side it falls on.
Clarity
Softness is the dominant dimension. Your coloring blends: hair, skin and eyes sit close together and nothing in your face is sharply separated from anything else. Every color in your palette has grey mixed into it, and that grey is not a compromise, it is the match.
Undertone
Warm is the secondary dimension and it is neutral leaning warm rather than golden. That is why you can wear a dusty denim blue or a soft plum, which a True Autumn would find slightly cold, while a clear cool blue is still wrong on you.
Depth
Depth is medium and it is the least defining of the three. Soft Autumns occur across a wide range of depths and skin tones; the common thread is the muted quality, not the darkness.
How to tell if you are a Soft Autumn
- Your features blend in a bare faced daylight photo. Nothing pops.
- Bright colors wear you rather than the other way round, even warm bright ones like true coral.
- Black is harsh and pure white is stark, and you probably already avoid both without knowing why.
- Your natural hair is a warm mushroom, soft caramel or golden mocha with no vivid gold and no ash.
- Gold works better than silver, but the difference is quieter than for a True Autumn.

How to wear the palette
Your palette is quiet, so let the texture do the shouting. A soft camel in a heavy knit, a muted teal in a raw silk, a sage in suede: the same color that looks flat in cheap flat cotton looks expensive in a fabric with a surface. This matters more for the two Soft seasons than for any others.
Tone on tone is a genuine strength. Camel with wheat with oyster, or sage with olive grey with lichen. Because all your colors carry the same amount of grey, they blend with each other automatically.
Soft coffee and warm taupe replace black and charcoal. If you need a dark for a formal outfit, soft coffee or the deep teal navy in your palette will always look better on you than black.
Gold in a matte or brushed finish. High polish gold has a clarity your face does not, so antique and brushed finishes sit better.
Colors to avoid, and why
Vibrant/bright colors, cool tones, true black and bright white, they overwhelm the gentle coloring and age it.
- Black and pure white. Both are absolute; your coloring is gradual, and the contrast lands on your face rather than on the clothes.
- Bright, saturated colors of any temperature. Brightness is the dimension you are furthest from, so this is a longer list than usual for you: true red, emerald, cobalt, fuchsia, clear coral.
- Icy pastels, which are both too cool and too clear.
- Cool jewel tones such as sapphire and true burgundy, which combine both of your problems at once.

Hair is the largest block of color you wear and the only one you cannot take off at the end of the day. These sit in the same temperature and depth range as your natural coloring.

Soft Autumn or Soft Summer?
The two Soft seasons share their dominant dimension and split on temperature. Both look best dusty and both are ruined by bright. Hold a soft terracotta against a dusty rose in daylight. Soft Autumn looks healthier in the terracotta, Soft Summer looks fresher in the rose. Do not use black as the test here, because it looks bad on both of you.
Soft Autumn or True Autumn?
Both are warm; the split is saturation. True Autumn wears the full strength version of your palette: rust where you wear soft terracotta, mustard where you wear muted mustard. If rich autumn colors look good on you rather than heavy, you are probably a True Autumn. If they feel like a lot, you are Soft.
