Dark Winter, also called Deep Winter, is the deepest cool season: strong, high contrast coloring that carries the darkest and richest colors in the whole system. Where Dark Winter sits
Every season is a position on three axes. Dark Winter is defined by its dark dimension, with cool deciding which side it falls on.
Depth
Depth is the dominant dimension. Your coloring is dark and it has weight: dark hair, usually dark eyes, and a clear distance between the depth of your hair and the depth of your skin. That distance is contrast, and it is why strong colors look normal on you.
Undertone
Cool is the secondary dimension and it is neutral leaning cool. Dark Winter borders Dark Autumn on the wheel, which is why a deep warm burgundy or a deep teal still works on you where a clear golden mustard does not.
Clarity
Clarity is medium to bright. Your colors are deep and clean rather than dusty. Anything with grey mixed into it flattens the contrast that defines your face.
How to tell if you are a Dark Winter
- Black next to your face looks striking rather than heavy, which is true of very few seasons.
- Your natural hair is dark: dark brown, black brown or black, usually with an ash or neutral cast.
- In a bare faced daylight photo there is a clear step between your hair and your skin.
- Silver reads cleaner than gold, though the difference can be less dramatic than for a True Winter.
- Pastels and dusty shades disappear on you or make you look ill.

How to wear the palette
You own the highest contrast outfit in the system, and it is worth using deliberately. True white against black, or icy blue against navy black: pairings that would cut most faces in half simply match the contrast you already have.
Deep jewel tones are the heart of the palette: cool burgundy, cool aubergine, deep emerald, royal blue, pine. Wear them at full depth rather than diluted.
Icy pastels are your only light colors and they work precisely because they are icy rather than soft. Icy blue is not powder blue; it is a pale color that still has clarity in it.
Silver, white gold and platinum, in high polish rather than brushed. Your coloring has clarity and the metal should too.
Colors to avoid, and why
Light and warm tones, golden oranges/browns, warm pastels, dusty yellows, they look drab and muddy.
- Warm golden shades: mustard, camel, rust, orange. These are the clearest failures, and camel in particular is the neutral most often bought by mistake.
- Dusty muted colors of every kind. Dusty rose, sage and mushroom flatten your contrast and read as dirt against clean coloring.
- Soft pastels. Icy pastels are yours; powdery ones are not, and the difference is clarity rather than lightness.
- Warm browns, especially camel and tan. Charcoal, cool taupe grey and navy do the same wardrobe job on you.

The two Dark seasons split on temperature. Dark Autumn is warm: rust, mustard, deep forest. Dark Winter is cool: true red, deep magenta, royal blue. Hold a deep rust against a cool burgundy in daylight; the one that makes your skin look clear rather than sallow is your side.
Dark Winter or True Winter?
Both are cool and deep; the split is which dimension leads. True Winter is cool first and can wear icy brights at full strength. Dark Winter is deep first and slightly neutral, which is why a deep warm burgundy sits fine on you and a True Winter would find it muddy.
