Dark Autumn Color Palette
Also called Deep Autumn. Same season, different naming system.
Dark Autumn, also called Deep Autumn, is the deepest warm season: rich, concentrated coloring that carries dark shades with warmth in them. Your palette is deep rust, warm oxblood, mustard gold, deep forest and deep teal, your neutrals are ecru and dark coffee rather than pure black, and your metal is gold.

Statement colors
Wearable near the face. These are the colors that carry an outfit.
Accents
Smaller doses: a scarf, a bag, a print.
Neutrals
The workhorses. Trousers, coats, knitwear and everything the statement colors sit against.
Best metal
Gold. Held flat against your bare cheek in daylight it blends into your skin, where the other metal sits on top of it. How to check this yourself.
Where Dark Autumn sits
Every season is a position on three axes. Dark Autumn is defined by its dark dimension, with warm deciding which side it falls on.
Depth
Depth is the dominant dimension. Your coloring is genuinely dark: dark hair, often deep eyes, and skin that can be anywhere from porcelain to deep brown but always reads with weight. Deep colors do not overpower you the way they overpower a Light season; they meet you.
Undertone
Warm is the secondary dimension and it is neutral leaning warm. Dark Autumn sits next to Dark Winter on the wheel, which is why you can carry a cool leaning aubergine or a deep burgundy that a True Autumn cannot.
Clarity
Clarity is medium. Your colors are rich rather than either muted or neon. Think of the difference between a deep forest green and a bright emerald, or between an oxblood and a true red.
How to tell if you are a Dark Autumn
- Your natural hair is genuinely dark: dark brown, black brown or dark auburn.
- Deep colors look good on you rather than heavy, which is the clearest split from the Soft and Light seasons.
- Gold is better than silver, but a warm bronze or antique gold suits you better than a bright yellow gold.
- Pastels are the obvious failure. They make you look like you borrowed the outfit.
- You can wear black, but a deep warm brown or a deep forest always looks better in the same outfit.
Your natural coloring
- Skin
- Light to deep, neutral to neutral-warm, golden/bronze.
- Hair
- Medium to dark golden brown, dark auburn, dark/black-brown with warm highlights.
- Eyes
- Dark hazel/green, warm dark brown/black, swirling patterns.
How to wear the palette
Depth on depth is your natural mode. Espresso brown with deep teal, oxblood with dark olive: outfits built entirely from the bottom half of the value scale look rich on you rather than gloomy, which is not true of most seasons.
When you want a light color, use ecru or camel rather than white. A pale warm neutral gives you the lift without the hard edge that pure white creates.
Deep gold and amber are your metallics as clothing colors, not just as jewellery. A mustard gold or a deep amber is one of the highest impact colors you own.
Gold in warm, deep finishes: antique gold, bronze, copper. Bright polished silver is the one thing that consistently looks wrong.
Colors to avoid, and why
Light and cool tones, pure white, pastels, dusty blue/pink, frosty shades, they wash out the rich depth.
- Pastels of all kinds. They are three or four steps lighter than your natural coloring and they wash out next to it.
- Dusty muted shades such as dusty rose and sage. Muted is the dimension you are furthest from; you need richness.
- Cool icy shades: icy pink, icy blue, cool lavender.
- Pure black next to the face. It works better on you than on most seasons, but dark coffee, deep forest and black brown all beat it.
Makeup for Dark Autumn
The same three dimensions apply to makeup, and lip color is where a mismatch shows fastest because it sits next to your teeth and your skin at once.

Hair colors that harmonise
Hair is the largest block of color you wear and the only one you cannot take off at the end of the day. These sit in the same temperature and depth range as your natural coloring.
If you are not sure
Dark Autumn sits between two neighbours on the flow wheel, and those two are the only seasons you can realistically be confused with. Here is how to tell them apart.
Dark Autumn or True Autumn?
Both are warm and rich; the split is depth. True Autumn peaks in the medium range with rust and chestnut. Dark Autumn goes deeper and carries near black browns and deep burgundies comfortably. If your natural hair is chestnut rather than dark brown, you are probably True Autumn.
Dark Autumn or Dark Winter?
The two Dark seasons share their dominant dimension and split on temperature. Dark Winter is cool: true red, deep magenta, royal blue. Dark Autumn is warm: rust, mustard, deep forest. The test is a deep warm rust against a deep cool burgundy in daylight, or gold against silver.
Dark Autumn celebrities
Estimates rather than verdicts. These typings come from published photographs under unknown lighting, usually with professional makeup and dyed hair, which are the three biggest sources of error in color analysis. They are useful for seeing what the season looks like on a face you already know.
- Ana de Armas Warm deep brown hair with golden skin and rich rather than bright coloring.
- Halle Berry Deep warm coloring with golden undertones and dark hair.
- Natalie Portman Deep, neutral warm coloring with dark brown hair and real weight in the features.
- Pedro Pascal Dark warm hair with golden toned skin and medium to deep depth.

Take the 60 second testQuestions people ask
- Is Dark Autumn the same as Deep Autumn?
- Yes. Dark Autumn and Deep Autumn are two names for the same season: the Autumn whose dominant dimension is depth rather than warmth or softness.
- Can a Dark Autumn wear black?
- Better than most seasons, yes, because your coloring is deep enough to meet it. But black is cool and absolute where you are warm and rich, so dark coffee, black brown and deep forest all look better in the same outfit. Use black away from the face if you want it in the wardrobe.
- What colors should a Dark Autumn avoid?
- Pastels, dusty muted shades and icy cool colors. All three are much lighter or much cooler than your coloring, so they leave your face looking disconnected from what you are wearing.
- What is the difference between Dark Autumn and Dark Winter?
- Temperature. Both are deep and both wear rich dark colors well. Dark Autumn is warm leaning: rust, mustard, deep forest, warm oxblood. Dark Winter is cool leaning: true red, deep magenta, royal blue, pine.
- What hair color suits a Dark Autumn?
- Dark auburn, deep chestnut, dark chocolate and espresso. Stay dark and stay warm. Going lighter than a medium brown flattens the depth that defines your season, and ash tones fight the warmth underneath it.
