Soft Summer Color Palette
Soft Summer is the most muted cool season: gentle, blended coloring that looks best in dusty, greyed shades with a cool cast. Your palette is dusty blue, sage, mauve, dusty rose and soft plum, your neutrals are dove grey and soft navy rather than black, and your metal is silver.

Statement colors
Wearable near the face. These are the colors that carry an outfit.
Accents
Smaller doses: a scarf, a bag, a print.
Neutrals
The workhorses. Trousers, coats, knitwear and everything the statement colors sit against.
Best metal
Silver. Held flat against your bare cheek in daylight it blends into your skin, where the other metal sits on top of it. How to check this yourself.
Where Soft Summer sits
Every season is a position on three axes. Soft Summer is defined by its soft dimension, with cool deciding which side it falls on.
Clarity
Softness is the dominant dimension and it is the whole key to this season. There is very little contrast anywhere in your face: hair, skin and eyes all sit close together in both depth and intensity. Every one of your colors has grey mixed into it, and that grey is the reason they work.
Undertone
Cool is the secondary dimension and it is neutral leaning cool. You are not as decisively blue based as a True Summer, which is exactly why you can wear a greyed olive or a soft mushroom that a True Summer cannot.
Depth
Depth is medium and, unusually, it is the least important dimension for you. Soft Summers come in a range of depths; what they share is the muted quality rather than a particular lightness.
How to tell if you are a Soft Summer
- In a bare faced daylight photo your features blend rather than pop. Nothing about your face is sharply separated from anything else.
- Bright colors overwhelm you. People say a color is beautiful and on you it looks like the color is wearing itself.
- Black is not just harsh on you, it makes your face look tired and slightly lined.
- Your natural hair is mushroom, greige or ash brown with no clear warmth and no clear coolness either.
- You have probably been told you look good in dusty rose, sage and dove grey, and probably been told you look washed out in white.
Your natural coloring
- Skin
- Fair to tan but muted; neutral/olive/neutral-cool, ashy.
- Hair
- Ash blonde to ash brown, never bright.
- Eyes
- Grey/grey-blue/grey-green/grey-hazel, softly greyed ('crackled glass').
How to wear the palette
Softness is not the same as beige. Soft Summer is the season most often dressed badly by being dressed blandly. Your palette contains a real dusty raspberry, a real soft plum and a real muted teal, and those are the colors that make the season look intentional rather than absent.
Match the softness of the color to the softness of your face and you can wear almost the whole palette together. Tone on tone in the mauve and grey lavender family, or sage with dusty blue, look genuinely elegant on you where they would look muddy on a Bright season.
Charcoal and soft navy replace black. Both are deep enough to hold a formal outfit together without introducing the hard edge black creates.
Silver and pewter, in brushed and matte finishes rather than high polish. A high shine metal introduces exactly the clarity your coloring does not have.
Colors to avoid, and why
Bright and warm tones, true black and true white, no tolerance for high intensity or hard contrast.
- Black, which is the single most damaging color in your wardrobe. It is both too dark and too clear for you.
- Pure white and optic white, which are too stark. Soft white with a little grey in it is your version.
- Bright, saturated colors of any temperature: true red, emerald, cobalt, fuchsia. Brightness is the dimension you are furthest from.
- Strongly warm golden shades such as mustard and rust, which fight the cool lean underneath the mutedness.
Makeup for Soft Summer
The same three dimensions apply to makeup, and lip color is where a mismatch shows fastest because it sits next to your teeth and your skin at once.

Hair colors that harmonise
Hair is the largest block of color you wear and the only one you cannot take off at the end of the day. These sit in the same temperature and depth range as your natural coloring.
If you are not sure
Soft Summer sits between two neighbours on the flow wheel, and those two are the only seasons you can realistically be confused with. Here is how to tell them apart.
Soft Summer or True Summer?
Both are cool and soft. The difference is which comes first. True Summer's colors are clearly blue based even when muted; Soft Summer's are muted first and only mildly cool. The practical test is a greyed olive or a mushroom brown. On a Soft Summer they look right. On a True Summer they look slightly sallow.
Soft Summer or Soft Autumn?
The two Soft seasons share their dominant dimension and split on temperature. Both look best in dusty, greyed shades and both are ruined by brights. Hold a soft rose against a soft terracotta in daylight. Soft Summer looks fresher in the rose; Soft Autumn looks healthier in the terracotta. Silver against gold gives the same answer, though for either Soft season the difference is quieter than for other seasons.
Soft Summer celebrities
Estimates rather than verdicts. These typings come from published photographs under unknown lighting, usually with professional makeup and dyed hair, which are the three biggest sources of error in color analysis. They are useful for seeing what the season looks like on a face you already know.
- Emilia Clarke Soft cool brown hair with light skin and a gentle rather than defined face.
- Jennifer Aniston Ash brown hair with a low contrast face and a muted, cool cast.
- Kristen Stewart Muted, blended coloring with no sharp separation between hair, skin and eyes.
- Sarah Jessica Parker Greige toned hair with softly contrasted coloring across the whole face.

Take the 60 second testQuestions people ask
- What colors should a Soft Summer avoid?
- Black, pure white, and any bright saturated color. Also avoid strongly warm shades like mustard and rust. The common thread is intensity: your coloring is muted, and anything at full strength next to your face takes the outfit over.
- Why does black look bad on a Soft Summer?
- Because black is both the deepest and the most absolute color there is, and Soft Summer coloring is neither deep nor absolute. Next to your face it creates a hard edge you have no natural equivalent for, which reads as tiredness. Charcoal and soft navy do the same wardrobe job without it.
- Is Soft Summer warm or cool?
- Neutral leaning cool. Cool enough that silver beats gold and that warm golden shades are a problem, but neutral enough that you can wear greyed warm colors like olive and mushroom, which a True Summer cannot.
- What is the difference between Soft Summer and Soft Autumn?
- Temperature only. Both are the most muted seasons in the system. Soft Summer leans cool: dusty rose, sage, mauve. Soft Autumn leans warm: camel, soft terracotta, muted mustard. If both look plausible on you, compare a dusty rose against a soft terracotta in daylight.
- What hair color suits a Soft Summer?
- Mushroom brown, ash brown, cool mocha and greige blonde. Avoid both extremes: high contrast dark colors create contrast your face does not have, and bright blonde highlights add clarity that fights your softness.
